The town of Oelsnitz / Erzgebirge, with its incorporated borough of Neuwürschnitz, is located in the Erzgebirge region (Ore Mountains). The proximity to major cities like Chemnitz (seat of the Regional Council) and Zwickau ensures good travel connections.
With its incorporation on 1 January 1999, the previously independent municipal of Neuwürschnitz became a borough of Oelsnitz / Erzgebirge.
As of 30 June 2010, the town stretches over 26.34 sq km (10.17 square miles) and has a population of more than 12,002.

The so-called „Grüne Linie“ (Green Line) has been in operation since 28 May 1998. It is a bus line connecting the towns of Stollberg, Oelsnitz and Lugau at hourly intervals.
