Technical Museum “Paper Mill” Niederzwönitz Technisches Museum Papiermühle Niederzwönitz
The paper mill of Niederzwönitz was first mentioned in 1568 thus being the oldest still workable paper mill all over Germany. Until the middle of the 19th century the mill used rags to produce vat paper. In 1984 the museum was opened to the public and is in its completeness unique in Germany. Several exhibition rooms inform the visitors about the history of craftsmanship and industry in Zwönitz. The tour through and around the historical building of the paper mill also includes the old water wheel and the water inlet. In the inner courtyard, the restaurant “Zur alten Mühle” offers plenty to eat and drink. Those interested in hand papermaking can do so under experienced guidance before maybe taking part in a creative course around paper.
